Honoring the Legacy of Willie E. Bryant

We warmly invite you to join us in honoring the life and legacy of Willie E. Bryant, affectionately known as “Hatchette Man.” A repast will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm in the old sanctuary. Let us come together to share memories, offer comfort, and celebrate the indelible mark he left on all our lives.

Willie E. Bryant, lovingly known as “Hatchette Man,” was born on November 16, 1962, in Southwest Miami-Dade to his devoted parents, Vernell Bryant Hudge and Josh Hunter. From an early age, Willie embodied a spirit of strength, resilience, and love that would define his life. As the eldest of three children, he embraced his role with grace, guiding his siblings with care and always placing family first.

During his high school years in Miami-Dade, Willie discovered his passion for football—a passion that earned him the nickname “Hatchette Man” from his coach and teammates. This name was a testament not only to his formidable skills on the field but also to the determination and heart he poured into everything he did.

Willie’s legacy extended far beyond the football field. For over 40 years, he was a dedicated and highly respected commercial truck driver. His work was not just a job to him; it was a source of pride, a testament to his unwavering commitment and work ethic. But while his professional life was important, it was the simple joys that truly captured his heart—fishing on a quiet morning, customizing vintage cars, raising and breeding dogs, and cheering on his favorite sports teams. These were the moments that brought him peace and happiness.

Yet, of all the loves in Willie’s life, none was greater than the love he had for his family. His children and grandchildren were the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them. But the bond he shared with his mother, Vernell, was something truly extraordinary. Their love was pure, unconditional, and unbreakable—a source of strength for both of them throughout their lives.

Faith was the cornerstone of Willie’s life. He embraced Christ and carried a deep belief in God’s grace. His faith filled him with joy and laughter, which he generously shared with everyone around him. Willie was not just a man who lived life; he was a man who made life better for those around him. His infectious smile, his hearty laugh, and his caring nature touched the hearts of many, leaving a legacy of love, compassion, and warmth.

On Monday morning, August 19, 2024, Willie was called home to be with our Heavenly Father. His departure has left a profound emptiness in our hearts, but it also reminds us of the beautiful life he lived and the countless ways he touched our lives. Willie is now reunited with his beloved son, Willie E. Bryant Jr.; his father, Josh Hunter; his brother, Jeffrey Hunter; his stepfather, Willie Hudge; his uncles, Ernest and Ronald Bryant; his grandfather, Oliver Douglas; and his grandmothers, Alvester Bryant and Willie Ruth Rivera.

Though Willie is no longer with us in body, his spirit and legacy continue to live on through those he loved most: his devoted mother, Vernell Bryant Hudge; his sister, Trailany Dixon; his loving companion, Katy Brown; his six daughters: Erica Williams, Crystal Bryant, Kimberly Williams, Layonda Bryant, Latoya Smith (Albert), and Bianca Alexis (Markinson); his two sons, Gregory Bryant and Rodney Martin (Laurel); his beloved aunt, Mildred Houston (Fred); his stepbrother, Willie Hudge, Jr. (Veda); his stepsister, Carlenia Moss (Dana); his nephew, Brandon Stokely; his niece, Skylar Rose Dixon; his 18 cherished grandchildren: Gregory Bryant Jr., Albert Smith Jr., Bryce Smith, Aidan Bryant, Cameron Conley, Malik Alexis, Trent Bryant, Markinson Alexis Jr., Jameason Martin, Chadrick Williams, Isiah Williams, Josiah Williams, Blessing Williams, Faith Elam, Celine Conley, Maleah Alexis, and Somorah Martin; and his dear friends, Albert Smith Sr. and Keir Moss, along with countless cousins and sorrowing friends.

Willie’s life was a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and faith. His legacy is one of strength, devotion, and an unshakable belief in the power of family. We invite you to join us at the repast to honor and celebrate the remarkable man he was and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
